    Default Delta - Gmc??

Christmas is approaching and I want a scroll saw from SANTA.

I am modest in my request but see variable speed is a must and pretty quick blade change is a bonus.

So I am looking at the DE-40-540 Delta at 299 sheckles in Carbatec and GMC thingy 148 sheckles in Bunnys - is the extra cost justified?

I don't want something that jumps all over the place but will secure it to a stand like Barry Whites most likely.

Any feedback from those in the know is appreciated -silly comments from those that don't have a clue will be entertaining if brief

    Thanks in advance cheers
    Cheers

No contest really, the Delta is the better machine.
I have two GMC's I use for teaching and the variable speed is quite good but not as solid or heavy as the Delta.
If you opt for the GMC shop around for I have seen the variable speed for about $120.00.
Weight is one of the factors that make for a good saw, nice big heavy table to stop vibration, the Delta is cast iron, GMC cast ribbed alloy.
The GMC does have a little LED on the end of an arm though, about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

I have used the Delta 16" saw quite a bit at WWW demo's and through my scrollsaw club, would easily recommend this over the GMC. And yes I did own a GMC singlel speed once. I have the Delta 20" at home.

I had a short play on the new GMC saw when I was down at Wogonga a few months ago. One of the things we noticed was that the laser structure interfered with you being able to adjust the tension of the blade properly .. and the things Iain pointed out

Had the better of the original GMC saws, then upgraded to the Delta.

The current GMC saw appears better than the predecessors but my (biased) opinion is that the Delta is still a better saw.

Well set up and attached to a solid stand/support is recommended either way.

Okay Delta it is - just have to get the 100% increase in cost of the original idea past SWMBO.

Perhaps can use the GMC as the thin end of the wedge and then the Delta as wisdom found once the idea began of course she knows me better than that so .

Hmmm so who can I blame for convincing me I just HAD to have the dearer unit? Well I think I know who gets the blame.

Still it is a tool needed so may as well get a reasonable one - now let's see convinced myself - that was easy - so only SWMBO left to go.

Oh and thanks for the feedback - appreciated

No no no no no, you look at something thing like the big Delta then begrudgingly admit defeat and take the smaller variable speed model.
Can't we trust you to get something right

Iain - sounds great in theory but my wife would see me start with the $900 machine then end up with the $300 machine and immediately look for her Christmas present with a $900 item and begrudgingly settle for a $890 present. I'm better off getting bashed for the $300 and matching it on her present - then the daugthers and the son's - oh where's the panadol

I was with Iain, lust after a higher end machine then "discover" what a good deal the 40-540 is for the price, etc... , but then...

...read your response, some fair points made, and decided an alternate approach:

Easier to get forgiveness than permission, or, an easier way to remember, Buy Now Pay Later

Or just buy the bl00dy Delta & make her something nice as soon as possible.

Hang on, do the make something nice bit anyway, lends credence to the whole "spend money on tools" thing.

Your right Scooter, I am going to buy the 300$ machine and say the guys in the forum talked me into it with their wisdom . I won't tell her the price but she will soon know - (a computer engineer with access to the bank account on line - so dead in the water on secrecy) And as for matching it with her Christmas present she told me last night what SANTA is getting her (a terrible four letter word) GOLD  So I can get stung for any amount on that one - Tread carefully I think.

or wait till the next WWW show where they usually have them around @250-$260, then you can go spend your savings on other things but the shows are a while away yet.

Teejay, at the risk of flogging a point, check out the scrollers forum archives for info on this saw, worth mentioning specifically is cleaning & lubricating the main pivot points for the saw's upper & lower arms, when you first unpack the unit. Delta are a bit sparing on the grease at times

Twill make the saw run smoother & easier, and last longer
