Ex21

Hi,
I recently bought an Excalibur EX21 scroll saw and as a newbie to this tool I'm having a couple of problems..
The main one is , how do I stop it vibrating?. No matter what speed or blade tension I try, I cannot get it to be vibration free. I've clamped it to the top of my bench hoping that might help...it did slightly. Another thing that bugs me is the blades never seem to cut straight...that is, if, for example I'm using a square piece of ply, I need to feed my work piece in at an angle to get a cut parallel to the side if that makes sense. Are these normal issues or am I being picky? The instruction booklet claims that by using the large adjustment knob at the rear of the unit it is possible to use different parts of the blade...well this stumps me....I just can't figure out how it possibly can....but again....that could be me....

any tips or advice greatly appreciated.. Dave.

Dave, scrollsaw blades dont cut straight, a little drift to one side is normal. There is a thread on here somewhere that talks about the ex21 and they recommend buying the stand to reduce the vibration.

Chances are somebody somewhere here answered the blade question before too.

Scrollsaw blades have a burr on one side on the back.... you can try to sand them down a bit , but it's much easier to just get used to pushing the work in at a bit of an angle.

As for vibration, aside from a good stand, a rubber mat under it works well and make sure the motor and everything are screwed down right ( mine was loose!)

Thanks for the help guys...I'll need to adjust to suit the saw it seems...at least I now know it is a characteristic of scrolling to cut straight edges at an angle..or is that angled edges straight...ohh..brain hurts...

I know it is a late reply but i fought an ex21 a couple of years ago and was having similar issues. The vibration wasnt terrible but it wasnt as good as i had hoped. After a lot of google surfing i discovered that a few people where having the same problem. The solution i found was to remove the triangular plate on the frame. It is the one on the opposite side to where the motor is mounted. U will see an allen key head there. U have to bend an 8mm spanner to get to the nut behind the allen key head to stop the thing spinning and tighten it up. Now my saw runs like i thought it would.

I looked at my saw and the plate I think you mean isn't triangular on mine but it does have 3 socket head screws in it and the tension adjuster to hold the top arm up...is that the plate you mean.?

Sorry bout the lateness of the reply we have had a death in the family. Anyways i am not at home yet so i cant check my saw i was working from memory. It is the plate on the opposite side of the arm of the motor. So u will have the motor sticking out one side and the plate is on the other. When u take that off there was an allen key bolt that u can tighten. I will post photos in the next couple of days when i get home
