Default What finish do you use????

Hi guys. You have probably been asked this question before but I don't have time to go through all the threads. I would like a nice glossy smooth finish. It does not have to be high gloss just glossy if you know what I mean. I have tried Glow but it gets stuck in the little cracks and grooves. I have tried Ultra Shine and that does the same. I don't really want to use spray but I will if I have to. Plus I don't like useing the polishing mop that I have because I always end up with bits of fluff (How do I stop that?????) Sorry about all the questions. If you can help I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks.

    Default A nice finish

    Hi Marg

For a very nice finish, try using Rustins Danish oil.

I have been using Organoil Danish Oil. What I like about this one is that it doesn't go off in the container at all. My last lot has been open for about 12 months and is as good as new.

I would be interested to hear how the Rustins danish oil lasts. I think there are other danish oils on the market that give a higher shine than Organoil but I won't buy any that will only last a few weeks in the container. It all comes down to wasting mony.

Another finish that I have been using is. Boiled linsede oil and let dry for forty eight hours. Coat with one coat of french polish and let dry fo half an hour. Finish with a bees wax furniture polish rubbed in with sctotch bright.

This gives a nice silky finish and is very economical. The main problem is the rubbing of very fine work. The rubbing could cause damage.

I don't think wax is a good choice for fine fretwork..... too hard to avoid getting it into all the little crevices. Oil's definately the way to go, I've tried different ones and my preference seems to change depending on the wood, weather... my mood....lol I really think trying different ones is the way to go..... even if you just use a piece of pine... try 4-5 different ones... let then dry for a couple of weeks, then touch them.. smell them... see if you like the look....

Oil is easy to get into the cut outs...... easier then sprays.... I often overspray a piece tying to get the insides of cut outs covered... then I get runs... then I get angry at myself.....

Have a feeling there just isn't one single product that will do it for all different projects.
One thing tho..... I don't like high gloss... seems to me that's a little like coating the wood with a layer of plastic...... but that's just my opinion.... a nice sheen just looks more natural..

Just a bit more on using wax. I agree it can get into fine spots but all I do is give it a light brush with an old tooth brush and it's out

Sorry guys I've been away for a few days so I have only just read your suggestions. Yes I think I will just try a few different ones on some scrap wood to see what I like best. The ones I don't like are orange oil because it can leave the timber with a yellowy look and the high gloss 2 or 3 step finish. I used it once and had to start all over again what a waste of time. Thanks for your help its much appreciated.
