Thread: Hegner Scroll Saw

Hi Bauldy,
In my opinion, I wood say, go for it.
I bought a Hegner 10+ - years ago, no problems, $400.
I'm not a real Scroller, but I don't think there are many better than the Heg.

I am still uncertain though, as while I am sure it will be an excellent saw, I would probably rather pay a bit more for a variable speed model with greater throat thickness.

Problem is I don't want to pay new price for my limited use and good second hand models are rare.

Meanwhile I will do some more reading, research and head scratching!

I have used mine a fair bit, but not a real lot, & I have never wanted to use a V/Speed job.
I really can't see what you wood use it for.
Admittedly, I have not read up on it.
I know a chap that does a lot, & I will ask him, as he has one, I'm sure.

The one I saw is on Gumtree selling in the Adelaide Hills, so probably only of interest to locals.

I did spot last night two for sale in Mackay also on Gumtree. A single speed for $400 and a Variable speed for $500. The variable speed would most likely have an 18in throat so would be perfect if only it was a bit closer!
Seeing it did make me think that new opportunities pop up all the time so I might keep looking.

I am looking at a Woodman at the moment, obviously not in the same league as the Hegner, but for a good price it may be OK.
People on this Forum have said that the later Woodman is the same as the Trupro which appears quite a good saw. I am not sure if this applies to older models (1991), but I am trying to get more info. This one is 18in but not variable speed, but it may enable me to advance further than I can with my current saw at a low entry cost.

Correct, but not for me, I already owned a Hegner. I have friends also looking for good scroll saw. However they are in Sydney therefore most likely will pass.
About 2 years ago I picked up the same multicut-2 single speed bundled with a Festool vacuum for around $600, so far very happy with it. I don't feel a need for variable speed. Before that I had a carbetec and hate it. Once you use Hegner you won't look back.
2nd hand Hegner don't come up very often, I'd say it's just coincident that 2 ad suddenly came up in Gumtree right now, if I were you I'd pay for shipping and get the one from Mackay.

I've had my multi speed 18" Hegner for 12 years and it gets used a lot and no problemss at all. Go for it before it goes as nothing I've tried or seen compares. Biased ...you bet

Hi Guys. I am in the UK and just recently joind the forum and I have had a few Hegners over the years. The single speed would not bother me as it only runs at 1450 anyway and this is good for most things but I find it slow going on 3/4 inch hardwood that I use for the things I make. If you are making things in plywood then a slower speed would probably be better. My current Hegner has a 20 inch throat, variable spped, front arm tension and I got Hegner to tweak the motor for me so it runs at 1650 now which is just great for the things I make. Hope this helps.

There is a Variable Speed Hegner located in <st1:city w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Sydney</st1lace></st1:city> on ebay at the moment. It started at$1250 but had no bids so has been re-listed at $1050. Perhaps with no sale itmay get to a price your colleague will be interested in.

My last post got a bit jumbled in cyberspace. It should have read that the Hegner was located in Sydney on ebay.

I also see a brandnew Excalibur with stand for only $500 on ebay and also in Sydney for those who may be interested.
