Default Issue with Hegner Scroll Saw

Firstly, I must say that I am reasonably new to woodwork and only had my scroll saw 12 month. Wondering if anyone can come up with any suggestions. I was using my scroll saw yesterday to cut some letters from 11 mm pine and it was working fine for the first hour. Then it seemed to be harder to keep the blade going in the direction I was steering it. I had changed the blade but this didn't fix the problem. It also was making - almost a rattle noise while I was cutting, but a soon as I'd stop cutting, the saw would just "purr" away. I slowed the saw down so I had more control in directing the blade. Then it broke a blade. When I removed it, the bit below the plate had a right angle bend in it. Then 2 more blades broke in the next 1/4 hour, again with the piece below the plate having a right angle bend in it. I had a quick look underneath, but not being mechanically minded in any way, and there's not somewhere I can quickly take it for a check up, I am just wondering if someone can suggest things I should be checking over. It almost sounds like something is lose, but I can't see anything that looks lose. Thank you for reading my plea.

Oops. Hit “thanks for pics” by mistake,

    Bushwalker - I don’t know what fixes you’ve tried, but I’d check:

    1. Is the blade properly tensioned, i.e. does it give a high note when plucked like a guitar string?
    2. Are you using a blade with wide tooth spacing? Sounds a bit like your blade is clogging up with sawdust on the 11mm pine.

Does the rattling sound mechanical or like the rattling you get when the workpiece is not held down to the table firmly enough?

i have a Hegner variable speed SS too, and those are the only things I can think of.

    Best regards,

    Brian

Thanks for your ideas Brian. Yes, I believe the blade/s were tensioned properly as they did have a nice sounding "ping". I was a little unsure of what blades to use for 11 mm pine, so I tried 3 different ones prior to commencing the work. From the blades I had on hand, I settled for P-Skip Tooth Reverse #5. Can you please suggest what blade would have been the best to use. Then I'll make sure I've got some on hand for next time.

Another suggestion is you may need to do a little maintenance lubrication on the saw as per this link, cheers

That is something that also crossed my mind, so I will give it the "once over" before I use it again. I appreciated you advice, thank you.

the bend in the blade you talk of is most likely caused by the locking mechanism not being cantered that is the attachment is not locking the blade in the centre.

Sorry for the very late response Mature One. But thats is something that could be a possibility, as I sometimes wonder if I have "locked" the blade in the centre of it's fitting. I'll make sure I check that properly each time I change a blade. Thanks for the very useful tip.

no problem ,you shouldn't have to check each time you use the saw once adjusted to centre the blade if you apply locktite to the fitting that should suffice for a long time.
