Jet JSS-16 Scroll Saw
I'm thinking seriously about purchasing a Jet JSS-16 scroll saw at the coming Brisbane Working with Wood show. Has anyone purchased one of these and if so what is your opinion. I appreciate all feedback, negative or positive.
Thankyou,
Penqueen.

Penqueen, I don't know from squat about scroll saws. However, I did need to do a number of blind cut-outs for a "set" of wood carvings. The wood was some 30mm thick. I had a hell of a time getting the blade poked through into the blind cutout spaces, even with things like 12mm relief holes.
Lets suppose you have 50mm stock and you really need to cut some blind, fancy-shaped holes/cutouts. Can the saw do that? The rest is easy.

Jet JSS scroll saw
Gregory Machinery - Scroll Saw - Jet JSS 16
Thank you for the reply. The maximum cut is 50mm on the Jet JSS-16.
I don't know a lot about scroll saws but I do know Jet make excellent Mini and Midi wood lathes.I also know the more expensive saws are better than the cheaper ones but as I'm on a very limited budget I cannot afford a 'Rolls Royce' scroll saw....
I have been reading and studying here on this forum about scroll saws because I want to make the right choice for me the first time. I'm now seriously thinking of stretching my budget a bit more towards the Hafco Woodmaster B-18V which has a bigger motor. (120W to 90W) This saw also has a slightly larger throat than the Jet. I intend getting in touch with the retailers of both saws before the Brisbane Working with Wood Show to make sure I can try before I commit to buy.

Hi Penqueen,
I have got a Jet SS 16 saw along with some others. This saw is basicly made for pin end blades.( At least the ones imported to Turkey are so) So I had to manufacture a plain-end blade holder myself.(both for upper and lower ends.) What we import here are Chinese made and poor quality. The table surface friction is very bad because poorly machined . The table center insert (red plastic) is thinner than the housing so the work piece tangles at the edges. The upper arm tension and release cam lever is of weak sheet metal and very apt to breaking if you don't use it in your palm. The star knob to lower the blower tip broke with almost no preassure on it.
I covered the whole table top with double sided tape without stripping the protective layer to overcome the friction and tangling.seyit

Thanks for your reply Seyit and for giving me some insight into the SS16 Jet Scroll Saw. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I don't know if there is any difference between your SS-16 Jet Scroll saw and the JSS-16 Jet Scroll Saw which I have seen advertised online and on the back of a recent woodworking magazine.
I'll be carefully checking out scroll saws at the Brisbane Working with Wood Show and asking where they are imported from while keeping your reply to me in mind. I'm also going to ask some of the members of my local woodclub who do scroll saw work.

Penqueen,
I'm afraid I don't know too much about a SS16 Jet Scroll Saw, but I have been scrolling for a few years now, started off with an obscure El Cheapo brand, then went to a Delta, which was a very good mid range saw, but I believe they no longer import Dela into OZ, so I finally saved my pennies and now have an Excalibur 21" which I find fantastic! I agree they are a bit pricey, but Carba Tec have them on special from time to time so you might be able to get a bargain at the Wood Show.

Thanks for replying dcooper. I'll be making the rounds at the wood show looking at scroll saws, asking lots of questions and trying out scroll saws. I have a very elcheap, it's a GMC that my now ex bought ages ago. The saw vibrates so much it has to be clamped to the a bench to stop it moving. I call this saw The Beast. I have to remember to ring of a couple of the blokes up here who are into scrollsawing..... I will definately be bargain hunting at the Wood Show.

Penqueen, Did you purchase a scrollsaw at the Wood Show? If so, what type did you end up with? I was rather amazed to see Carba Tec had the Excalibur down to $775! Wheh I bought mine from them a couple of years ago I paid $950! Obviously the cheaper price refelcts the current exchange rate, I guess

Have my scroll saw :-)
Thank you for asking. Yes I have my new scroll saw. It's not a Jet but a Trupro Model : CH-SE18VS from the same company. I think (hope) that I got an excellent deal. The TruPros that I have seen online have a different model number and are LOTS more expensive than what I paid......
I did the rounds of the demonstrating scrollers from both wood clubs and talked extensively about scrollsaws before I made my decision. My saw appears to me to be a Hegner lookalike. I have not used my scroll saw yet as I severly underestimated the room needed for the saw and stand. I am in the process of rearranging the garage.

Thanks Patch, I previously read about your problems. I also haunted scroll saw threads here and on other forums and sites taking note of what NOT to buy.

Hi penqueen,
hope you are up and running with your saw. I have a similar Hegner lookalike - WMS - same machine but mine is red.
A couple of points that might help (if you've scoured the forum then you may be aware but -)
I had a problem with the small pin that the quick release lever swivels(?) on which I lost - it was a push fit and I reckon really needed a couple of clips, anyway I was for ever having to push it back into place and then one day I didn't and lost it. Solved easily with a small split pin which I cut to length.. Works for me.
I also bought the Hegner quick release top clamp, not cheap but worthwhile I reckon.
The manual supplied with my WMS was pretty minimal so I've downloaded a fuller one - the Hegner one - from here
manuals
Hope it helps.

Legend :-)
Hey thanks Bob, you're a legend I did read about the problems you had and I'm sure I saved the thread to my favourites for easy future reference. I know that I have a lot of scroll saw related stuff saved on my puter. At least then I can easily find it again. Yes I fully intend to buy the Hegner quick release clamp but thanks for the advice anyway as it's very much appreciated.
