    Default Making jigsaw puzzles

Swmbo has got it in her head that I should make some jigsaw puzzles but I'm not a toyman so I thought I'd teach her to use the scrollsaw so she can make as many as she wants.

    Some advice needed.
How do you put the pic on the wood and cut it so it finishes up with smooth edges? Any other comments very welcome!!
    Regards, Bob Thomas

    1. Good adhesive that won't lift
    2. Reverse tooth or crown tooth blade
    3. Fine blade (if it's a ply base about a 3)
    4. PGT or similar which are ultra sharp, machine ground not stamped

If you really want to create a challenge tilt the table about 5 degrees left and right for each different piece so that it can only be assembled in a strict order, must be a captive frame though.
I have done some of these for adults and it can be a real challenge for what appears to be a simple jigsaw that just won't go together unless you get the pieces in the right order, like wedges, all asre about and won't go in the 'ole
BUt then, I'm a sadistic bastard

    Default jigsaw puzzles

    Hi Bob
We bought a scroll saw pattern book. Then traced/photocopied the patterns from it b4 applying the pattern to the wood using carbon paper.
My wife just used acrylic paint with a paintbrush after I cut the pieces.
Our puzzles are for younger children so hope this is of some help.

Bob, spray adhesive to attach the pattern.

Put that 2" wide clear packing tape on top and (if required, eg. excessive burning) on bottom of workpiece, helps the blade run cooler.

Use shellite to remove the pattern when cut out.

I have done some with a #3 FD skip reverse blade with good results.

    Cheers...............Sean

When I said good glue, I was referring to the jigsaw where the paper stays on, like the commercial ones.
A rubber based adhesive is what is recomended for patterns, or eveen graphite paper which will leave a pattern behind, bit like tracing paper.

Brett, love to take the credit but I think it was Pete (fxst) who originally mentioned the shellite as the go, evaporates quickly & leaves no oily residue.

In any case, it is the go I reckon.

That makes sense wot Iain sed about using good glue if the pattern is to stay on, eg. a photo type jigsaw.

    Cheers...............Sean
