New Saw
Hi All
I'm new to this forum thing and reasonably new to scrolling.
Recently obtained a home brand/no name 16'scroll saw for the right price and have now caught the scrolling bug so I"m going to purchase a decent scroll saw.I have done a little research on mid range scroll saws and would appriciate any views on the Carbatec18' or MakitaSJ401 scroll saws or other breads of saw arround the $500 to $600 mark as the budget won't stretch to the Excalibur 21' which appears to be the Bees Knees of scroll saws according to popular oppinion.
Any and all advice or warnings much appriciated
Thanks

I have the WMS saw, which is the same as the Carba-tec one you mentioned. I have had no problems at all with mine and im quite happy with how it performs.
The only thing you may find you want to change on it is the blade clamps, the ones that come with it use an allen key grub screw. I changed mine to the Hegner clamps (normal one on the bottom and the quick release for the top). You can get the clamps from Carrolls. Carrolls also sell the Trupro saw (same as the Carba-tec 18" and the WMS), you might want to check with Jim if the price of the saw has come down from the one listed on the website.
As for the Makita, it looks to be one of the cheaper variety, I would go the Carba-tec if thats in your budget range.Brett
Only Robinson Crusoe could get everything done by Friday!

I have the Trupro, which is basically the same as Bretts and the CT 18". As far as I am concerned, unless you get the Hegner, there is no better saw. (I have had it for about 3 years now and have had no trouble and I am a heavy user). In my opinion the EXs are overrated, especially after trying out my daughter's new one. As far as smoothness goes, the Trupro leaves it for dead. The manual isnt much, but you can use the Hegner one - the saws are near enough identical.

Woodman aka Tru Pro
I was sold a 'Woodman' at the latest Brisbane Wood Show by Gregorys. It is actually a Trupro and an absolute dream to use. My saw easily passes the 50 cent test..... I love my scrollsaw.
Marg. ( a scrollin' I will go....)
