    Default wood to start out with?

    Was just wondering what kind of wood would you guys recommend to start out scrolling with? Pine perhaps?

    Yep, and any scraps you can find that are free.
    Plywood is good too and much more cooperative that thick timbers.

    What Iain said. Try to use as many different types of wood/thickness/blade combinations to see what works and what doesn't, before you try expensive stuff.

    Sean,
    If you use plywood try Interior Hoop Pine. This ply has two good side and the glue line between the plies is clear.A 2400mm x 4800mm sheet is about $80.00
