What is the best Scroll saw??
I have had a cheapie scroll saw which was great for many years, I decided to update to an Excalibur 21" and wish to replace it as I am not happy with it. I am thinking of a Hegner, but interested in others experience of what they have and are using. Looki g forward to peoples responses. (I will probably put it up for sale - is about $600 reasonable? - I paid over $1000 2 years ago and it has a "short" in the motor).

I knew I was doing it wrong, I have been very happy with my 21" Excalibur for 8 months, admitting I'm not using it nearly as much as I want to (other timber chores taking precedence.
I have heard hegner are very good, they were out of my price range when I was shopping.
cheers

I can't honestly comment on the "recommended" scrollies, but I have a total cheap-o Ryobi scroll and found that it's the blades that matter the most. The machine itself might rightfully be considered junk, but once I switched to some Flying Dragon or Paragon(?) blades, I was VERY impressed with how well it worked and the (amateur) results I got from it.
It only took a couple of little hacks to ifx up the saw itself - making a zero clearance table top and leveliing the crappy plastic insert - but compared to buying one of the "known" machines: I saved a tonne, sacrificed little quality, and have been pretty happy with it.

I would stay away from the GMC unit that I picked up new for $50 ...... it vibrated itself to death and it cost me more than the cost of the unit to replace the bearing that blew apart due to the vibration (I never knew how expensive bearings were!). The motor then vibrated itself off the base due to the poor spot welds and is now held together with my poor welding and some cable ties.
All that being said you are more than welcome to trade your Excalibur for the GMC if you are keen ..... to be fair I will not even ask for any further money to sweeten the deal.
Edit: Hang on a second ..... I just noticed that your machine has a short and does not run ..... I will need to amend my offer to now to include the Excalibur + $50 as a fair swap for the GMC if you are still keen. PM me!Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Some will argue the Hawk is the best. I don't have one but almost bought one once. Had a chance to buy a like new 21" one for $300. I just couldn't justify it so my friend snatched it up.

Tennyson, I am not saying this is the best scroll saw but have a look a look at the carba-tec 18" scroll saw. It is a copy of the hegner, I purchased mine about 12 mths ago & I am completely happy with it. Good Luck with your search. Regard's Jim

Thanks for comments
Thanks for feedback. I'm still committed to purchasing a Hegner, just wish they had a faster feed mechanism like the excalibur (General now I believe).

Excalibur fixed - still for sale
My "fused motor" turned out to only be a fuse and once replaced, it is working perfectly now. I went to Carba-Tec who said the fuse probably was a result of pushing timber too big through it and not having the motor calibrated properly, which is now done and it is all fine and working 100% again! but I am still wanting to get a Hegner, so is for sale $600.

Hegner are excellent. I had one and only sold it because I no longer did as much scroll saw work. You are limited in choice because of your location as in other parts of the world you can find little known brands that are very good. For example:

This machine weighs about 120kg, is 3 phase and built in Sweden. They can be had for about $600.
