Thread: Scroll Saw Advice Please

I was in Hare and Forbes, Coopers Plains, last Thursday and they had a couple of decent looking scroll saws for sale. Looked like they were second hand but price was pretty reasonable as I remember I think around the $160 mark. Might be worth a phone call to get some information on them. Phone number is 32744222. While we're on the subject of new saws, does anyone know anything about the Triton scroll saw? I'm gonna need a new saw as soon as I put some cash together and the asking price of $350 seems to be in my area. The only thing wrong with my crappy old GMC is the welding broke on the motor mount and I don't got a welder. The tritin looks interesting in that the arm tilts instead of the table. That would have to make angle cutting somewhat easier. Any assistance on this would be appreciated.

Bunnings are the distributor for the Tryton scroll saw. I tied to see one when I was looking last year but Mr Bunnings refused to put one into their local store. All I had seen was a photo on their flyer and what I could make of that was it looked like the Carba Tec saw. Carba Tec have now taken that out their range. There was somethng on the forum a fair while ago. Some one had bought one of these and as I can recall the person wasn't very impress due to vibration.

Triton is now owned by GMC. I don't know how they expect to sell them if they don't put them on display.

would love to hear from someone who actually used the triton saw.
Looked at the site and it sounds interesting.... has a lot of features I'd like to have.
Biggest thing worrying me is that it takes both pin and pinless - with adaptor.... I find that usually the minute you have to adapt anything it doesn't work as well as something that's specifically made for the purpose. Watched several of our club members struggle through blade changes with their adaptors on cheaper saws... it's painful to watch and takes a lot of the fun out of scrolling.

Why in the world manufacturers make it so hard for us to test drive saws is beyond me..... you want to sell them.... show them......let us use them.... buying a saw for someone who wants to use it every day is not something to do on the quick... got to live with that decision for a long time, so I think it would be terrific if we'd be able to have several saws side by side and give them all a try!

I think the reason is pure economics. There are simply not enough scrollers to justify having a demo in store. Very unfortunate, but true I would guess. All you can do is do as much research as you possibly can before buying, and look at all saws that are available.(That part shouldn't take long, there are not many in Au.!! lol) Ask owners of the saw you are looking at if they are happy with it, both here and in overseas forums.

Biggest problem I've found with the Triton, is you have no way of adjusting blade tension, and given the quick release mechanism is part of the primary blade-holding mechanism, it's springs are the only thing providing blade tension.

It does not seem anywhere near tight enough to my way of thinking.

FWIW, there are the final batch of Delta 16" VS Scrollsaws being sold by Carbatec (Melbourne) for $250 - I'll start a new thread about it, but it might be worth a look seeing as they seem like they have been very popular in the past.
