Thread: When do you scrollers buy your wood?

My wife and I also do a bit of lathe turning, ourselves. For ourselves, we don't do much turning during the summer. We seem to get caught up with spending time outdoors, fishing, and what-not. Since I sell bowl-blanks also, I notice a drop in sales on those, during the summer, too.

But, I don't know the seasonal activity of you scrollers, yet. What time of year do scrollers do most of their scrolling? Is there a drop-off in the summer, too, or do you folks keep on cuttin', gearing up for fall shows?

Educate me, please.

Just had a look at your web page and was unable to actually view any of the thin timber packs. Saw the main page ok but not able to go further

No special time to buy it for me, I ordered when I need it. I pretty much cut all year when I get the time to do it. Others may be limited depending if their workshop is too cold or hot too work in

An interesting thread however being in america the costing of freight to aust may be a problem and i am not sure if this type of timber can be imported Can somebody advise me please if it can be imported ?????
What a wonderfull selection this gentleman can provide and i congratulate him and wish him well
I have tried to find good timber in aust and found some very good and cheap stuff on E-bay
There is a company called J & C thin Timbers 17 Van Doren Rd gympie Qld 4570 Phone 0758422561 Fax 0754837670 who supply a very large range of timber for scroll saw workers
They sent me down a catologue with all their materials but as yet i have not ordered any
Does anybody else have the details of any other supplier ,If so i will appreciate any advice given

I got postage costs from thinboards about some elm, it wasn't over the top as I would have got enough thin boards to easily justify the postage cost, and sources of elm in oz aren't plentiful.

So do your sums!!!!

Dirk, I'm in the US and not far from you....As far as scrolling being seasonal...My cutting is not. I cut year round....not for shows but as the orders come in. When I buy wood...As I need it. I stockpile when I can get a good deal on rough lumber. Thin wood that is not one of the readily available species here in Michigan...I order as needed or pic of a few pieces up here and there when I catch a good deal. Other scrollers that I know tend to slack off in the summer months due to fishing, golf and other outside activities unless they do the shows...then they on cutting year round. Will have to check out your site and prices. I general order my thin woods from Sloan's down in Tennessee.

I have ordered a bit through J&C as do a few members of the scroll group im in, prices are reasonable and service is great.

I found it fairly easy to get wood through our local club, much easier then trying to find good ply like so many of you living in the US use for portraits. Local hardware store only has one kind and it splinters like you wouldn't believe.
As for sending overseas..... I've been told by customs that if the wood has been finished and sealed it's ok, but nothing in a natural state, didn't think at the time to ask what ply wood would come under.
