Scrolling acrylic
David scrounged some 10ml acrylic from work some time ago, with a view to seeing how he could use it on the scroll saw.
Among all his books he got for Christmas were a couple of exercises in acrylic. It was quite a challenge to scroll saw.
The dancer is made on the band saw, while the Kockopelli (Hopi Indian fertility God) was made on the scroll saw.
The acrylic sheet was an old desk surround, so it had a few scratches, but was good enough to see how the exercise might work.
Both pieces were difficult to photograph because they needed a contrasting background to bring out the image. Being lazy, I popped them onto our wood heater, hence the rather odd base to the photo.
Cheers
Lili

Have you seen the effect of shining a light through those type of pieces? It only shines out the edges.
Unfortunately it also shines out of scratches. Routed lettering also lights up. Some interesting experiments if you did not already know about it.
Regards
PS Does Dave ever stop playing with his scroll saw? His out put is staggering.Hugh
Enough is enough, more than enough is too much.

Dave is relentless in his pursuit of new things on the scroll saw. Now that he's retired, he turns out a myriad of new things every week. We're building a nice stock of items for sale sometime in the future. I'm getting him ever more books to keep his interest in his scroll saw going. I think you need challenges and problems to solve if you really want to make the best of your equipment.
I'm not a great fan of the acrylic scrolling, being too fussy to live with anything but the cleanest of work. We looked at the possibility of buying some acrylic mirror until the price stopped us cold - @$220/sq m. I guess this acrylic material would be price prohibitive if you wanted it perfect.
I really must get more enthusiastic about my job of photographing his pieces. I'll try that light being shone through. Sounds interesting.

Acrlic Mirror,- scrolling Acrylics, etc.
Hi LilliB. Definately like the artistic shapes Dave has done. Here's a suggestion for you, ( and anyone else interested ), don't buy Acrylic, ( also commonly called Perspex ), from any old supplier,- instead contact a Specialist Plastic Fabricator,- one of those companies who design and make plastic signboards, acrylic counter displays, and all that sorta stuff,- ask IF you can go through their Off-cuts heap, and you will be pleasently surprised with what you discover, and best of all, only pay, " peanuts, " for the acrylic pieces, which besides Clear, also come in a wide variety of colours, plus Mirror, and in thicknesses from 3mm. up to, 25mm. which gives any artistically-minded scroller a wide product selection to, " play with. "
Scored a heap of Mirror Acrylic several years ago from a well-known Adelaide Plastics Fabricator, for the," shocking price " of, ( don't faint anyone ), - " Help yourself mate, " its only going to get tipped out !!!
Am about to get some more shortly,- this time round a bit more of an assortment, of both Mirror Acrylic, and assorted colours, etc.
*** Interested,- Simply look in the Yellow Pages, for, " Plastics Fabricators. " Might take a few phone calls to find out who has what, & where,- but when you find what you are looking for at the, " Right Price," then the time spent on the phone, & email, etc., works out to be very cheap in comparison.

A black box made with a hole or slot underneath the acrylic and a globe in it makes an excellent way of displaying this effect. Acrylic will "pipe light" through until the rays hit a cut surface. The light will even travel around curved surfaces, hence the old "filament" lights that have strands that wave around as you touch them and glow at their end. The same principal is used in the radio station pointer on pre- digital stereos - the pink or green light that winds across the screen.

Since the boy is stretching out into other materials. . . . .
How about single and double-sided printed circuit board? Hobby grades are copper-clad fiberglass. Be METICULOUS about the glass dust control. The copper can be polished up then an acrylic clear coat. Corroded is a nice green.
I have several 8" x 12" sheets. Intend to cut & shape for eyes, etc., in wood carvings. Far less fiddle than trying to source the copper sheet.
