    Default Scrollsaw Baskets

    Hi everyone
Like most others I was blown away by the scrollsaw baskets I saw from Canada. They are beauties, and make very glamorous interior decoration.

David made this one afternoon recently just to see how they came together. I'm afraid I quite stupidly tried to lacquer it and made a mess of it. Lesson: oil or wax, don't poly. So, I'll keep it as a sideboard piece. I bought all the plans, and I think they're wonderful.

David used the bandsaw to do the struts that pin the things together as well as the rounds that make up the basket itself. So the only scrollsawing came when he cut the fretwork base. I call it cheating, but he reckons it's easier to cut straight and curved lines on the bandsaw.

But then I told him years ago that the bandsaw is the most dangerous piece of equipment made since the AK47!!!

I wouldn't go near it, and can hardly bear to watch him operating it. I have visions of digits lying around in a pool of blood. My imagination will be my downfall one day.

Beautiful. I love these baskets, I have all the patterns too and when I get chance I will make a couple. Very glad no digits were lost in the making.

Looks like you did a nice job, sorry to hear about the finishing problems. I would personally think that a lot of the pieces would be harder to cut on the band saw, but I guess I'm not really experienced in that department.

I'm glad to hear that you like the baskets. I do keep adding to the collection and have just finished building one today actually. I came across this thread when searching for inspiration for my next one. They are fun to make... I can't really tell what they are going to look like when I am looking at my pattern in a flat, 2-dimensional version so it's always a surprise when I get them together.

There's a similar basket in our local art gallery shop. The difference is that it was cut as a long, long spiral, some sort of rotating prop/handle holds it up and open. Move that handle and it flops down flat as a beer mat.

    I like yours better.
