Spray Poly
I have been using oil to finishing my scroll work for a while now, starting with BLO and now use Danish Oil. However, im not always happy with how it looks, depending on the timber it can often look like it has no finish at all. I have been looking for a finish that is relatively easy to apply and will give it a nice shine, nothing too glossy though.
I have been browsing a few US based forums and found a few people using BLO or Danish oil and then applying a few coats of spray polyurethane (sanding between coats).
Firstly, can you get spray poly in Australia? Had a look around a few of the regular sites but could not find anything.
What grade sandpaper would you use between coats? and do you sand the final coat?
When I first started scrolling I tried spray varnish and due to my error i tried to apply the coats too thick, do I just do passing sweeps and rely on the 4-5 coats to give it a good covering?Brett

gday Brett.......I have used Danish oil for years now on probably 99% of my work. I agree that a lot of it looks very dull, as you say it looks as though there is hardly any finish at all. I use Rustins brand (from Carrolls - not sure where else you can get it) and it leaves a very nice finish with a slight shine. (I have not long finished the Eiffel Tower and it looks great). If I want a higher shine, or more protection, I spray a couple of coats of spay-on poly. You can get it at any hardware shop, the most common brand I suppose is Wattyl (Estapol). I use a 1200 grit paper between coats and a very light sand with a worn 1200 paper after the last coat. Some people even use brown paper I have heard. Fret work leaves very few options for sanding and finishes I have found because of the intricate work, but this seems to work very well for me. Another problem I have found is sealing the wood inside all the cuts. Recently I came across a spray-on shellac and I found it amazing at sealing the wood and it doesn't really need any other finish either. It leaves a high lustre. The brand I used was Zinsser Bullseye. I really had to look to find it though. I have tried a lot of different products but I always seem to return to Rustins Danish oil. Very easy to apply - basically just brush it on.
Hope this helps a little.
