    Default Total novice question

Hi guys, Bunnings and ALDI have scroll saws for $90 at the moment. So I'm thinking of getting one. It would just be for very occasional use. For example, some Christmas decorations.

Having never used one, I am wondering if I need some sort of foot pedal to turn it off and on. I assume it doesn't come with that. Is that important, or do you just hold your piece with one hand and switch off the machine with the other?

I am not a scroller, but I did once purchase a cheap machine from Carbatec. This would have been more expensive, and likely better, than the Bunnings variety. I returned it very quickly as it vibrated so much that it made accuracy difficult.

A cheap way of scroll sawing remains (hand) fret- and coping saws.

I think you would probably pay more for the foot switch than you payed for the saw. There is no reason why you can't use the saw switch. Just not as convenient as the one on the floor. Good luck just remember you get what you pay for.

I have a scroll saw that was bought at a wood work show in the late 1990's. (They were good shows.) Very basic. I can use plane or pinned blades. Managed with just the on/off switch on the saw.

    My 2cents worth sir...
I bought a "nearly $200 Ryobi" a good few years back; it got passed on within a year and I bought a secondhand Hegner c/w a foot switch.
It's a so much better machine, smoother with less vibration.
Save up, look for a good quality secondhand unit.
Buying cheap is never a good option, sorry!
    Cheers, crowie
