What Is wrong
I have just been to our local Bunnings store and went to the timber section. I was very pleased to see that they are once again stocking a rang of 12ml radiata pine.
However checking the label I found that it is a product of New Zealand.
WHY are we importing this timber when we have vast radiata pine forest all through our own country.
What is wrong with us

Thats an easy question. The Oz dollar is high so NZ pine is getting cheaper. Also I find that the NZ pine is a little slower grown and therefore more dense and that they run their kilns a little cooler and slower so therefore less internal checking. I used to buy packs of 70mm square furniture grade and the wholesale industry made no mention of where the timber came from unless you asked. Last pack came from Mamuka and I am looking forward to making a tax deductable trip to the north island one day to check out the resource.

Yep, Len is correct.
I used to keep bees. All hive timber was from NZ. Definitely
a superior grade of Radiata.

Yep, noticed the same thing,
You can go to Mitre 10 and pay around the $5.50 mark for a 2.4 m length of 42x19 of rubbish finger jointed every 400mm or so, or you can go to Bunnings and get a clear grade straight piece for about $2 less.
Your choice Hobson
