I have installed a new vanity and have got to the point of fitting the chrome pop-up plug into the ceramic basin. With the plug came 2 soft rubber washers. Even if I finger tighten the nut beneath the plug the washers squeeze out and it all leaks.
My solution is to use copious amounts of silicon sealant, place the plug in the hole (sans washers) press down until silicon squeezes out all round and wait a day til it goes off. THEN apply more sealant on the underside nut and washer and tighten firmly, again waiting till it drys before using.
This seems time consuming and complicated, have I missed something here? What is usually done to seal a plug into a basin?

All thoughts appreciated. thanks
