Hi

Just finished building a small deck off the front of our 1940's cottage;

3800mm x 1900mm

Hardwood bearers 140 x 45

Hardwood joists 140 x 38

Pelawan hardwood decking 90 x 19

Finished in feast watson deck oil

BUILD

First cleared the site that was a small footpath and mixed plants.

Attachment 74988

Attached wall plate/bearer to brick wall with dynabolts at 600mm centres.

Attachment 74989

No 1 son drilling holes in plate before drilling holes for dyna bolts in wall.

Attachment 74990

The step that the deck would sit next to was not level so I ran another wall plate across that end and made sure it was level. Plan is to lay the boards over the step up to the patio so they are level.

Attachment 74991

Attached end joist to wall plate (this has a temporary bracket holding it which was replaced later with a full length bracket) and front bearer. The bearer is screwed (big wood screw with the allen head) into the joist and also held in with 90deg bracket) A temporary stay is attached to hold the corner up while the post is made.

Attachment 74992

The front bearer is levelled (helpers having a rest)

Attachment 74994

Post is made and attached to bracket. I make my posts from 2 pieces of 90 x 45 hardwood and one side is shorter by the width of the bearer. This way the bearer bears down directly onto the footing and the bolts holding it are less important. They are glued and screwed together.

Attachment 74995

Joist attached with brackets and also screwed through from the front. Middle post also fitted and one about 300mm under the deck near the step as I hit a boulder.

Attachment 74996

Decking laid. I used gal nails and predrilled the pelawan before nailing. Spacing is the thickness of the nails (about 2.7mm). I attached the first one next to the wall and then worked my way across. Used some clamps in spread mode to fix any warps. Really happy with the Pelawan. No splits or other issues. Was able to get full lengths so there are no joins. Daughter of Dazzler weight tests the deck.

This is how the section near the step was finished. Underneath I used wood blocks and liquid nails to fill the space between the concrete and the decking timber.

Deck oiled

Then built a short walkway off the deck to go towards the path

All oiled and no probs. Just have to finish off a little step at the end of the walkway and get the plants in.

cheers
