G'day all. Not sure what section a wall insulation retrofit question goes, so here it is.

I have a brick veneer house on a sloping block. Imagine 2 rectangles side by side, with one common wall joining them. This common wall is single leaf, brick and pier, about 3m high. It forms the internal wall of one part of the house (the lower) and the foundations of the other part (the upper). If you've seen Pettit and Sevitt houses on sloped blocks in Sydney, you'll get the idea.

Anyway, I'd like to insulate the foundation side of this common wall, by attaching a rigid-but-light insulation board to the vertical faces of the brick piers. So:
1. What insulation?
2. How to attach it to the piers?
3. The wall sits on the ground (obvious), with the dpc 1 course up. For damp and whiteant reasons, the insulation has to start about 100mm or so of the ground. So how to stop thermal bridging? Would it be possible to (say) glue pieces of batt in the gap formed by the wall, piers and attached insulation? What with?

There is no icon that indicates shivering ... pity
