    Is this protection pad a necessity to use mesh discs on a Festool sander?

    Good Morning,

    No it is not a necessity. It will simply protect the hook and your back-up pad and therefore extend its life. Back-Up Pads can be rather expensive which is why we suggest using a protection pad.
