Default Goods n Chattel's hide glue

Goods n Chattel sell hide glue and the gram strength written on their website is a question mark as the seller doesn't know what it really is.
She tried looking looking for an answer on the package but there's no info. My gut say's steer clear from it but it's so well priced that it's hard to ignore.

I recently went through the same experience; no product info.

    I took a punt and went for this;

Joiners Glue Animal Glue Pearl Glue for Strong Wood Joints - 450g, 1kg | Restorers Choice

Did a test joint first, not disappointed.

But I hoped that a restorers suppliers would only stock reasonable supplies or their reputation would suffer.

There’s no doubt that Restorer’s choice sells quality stuff, I buy shellac flakes and DAA from them. The glue at goods n chattel is cheap, the cheapest I found anywhere on the net. That’s web that’s tangled me in. I can buy it to experiment because it won’t tell me what gram strength it is.

    Hi Chris

I have only ever seen it in a James Wright video - US centric of course.

How to Make and Use Hide Glue - YouTube

    Cheers
    Keith

PS: I use a "repurposed" rice cooker; aka stolen from the pantry.

I have written extensive articles on hide glue which can all be found on my blog
Journeyman's Journal – This is a journal of the art of woodworking by hand

In short, gram strength varies from 80 all the way up to 512. The weakest being at 80 and the strongest 512. Generally in cabinetmaking we would use between 192 and 251. 192 would be most favourable for veneering. You also must consider the higher the gram strength the shorter the open time. Luthiers would use upwards of 400.

Now that I've said all that, it's important for me to know what gram strength this woman is selling and it is much less important to me for her to get upset when I asked her this question.

But does any glue supplier specify a gram strength? I have never heard of it but that does not mean much.

I believe the term "Double Bloom" refers to the gram strength, in this case 200 as written on the product from Restorers Choice, so this is perfect for cabinetry. I bought from Gold Leaf but they only specified a range of 100 to 200, and the glue was a bit weak for my liking. Thanks for the link I will get some of this instead!

yes you are correct in regards to the gram strength however, I cannot vouch for its quality as I don’t know from whom he buys it from. I buy mine from Patrick Edwards in the US and he gets it from Milling and Higgins. I once wrote to Milligan and Higgins about ordering fifty pounds and they rudely said they do not ship to Australia. If I knew for certain that the glue from Restorer’s choice is made to the same quality as Milligan and Higgins I would drop them in a heart beat. I buy shellac from Restorer’s choice and I can vouch for that. You have to be very careful where you buy from as the seller could be getting them from China and they aren’t worth the bag it’s in

    Interesting. What's the hide source?
Luthiers here use beef, chicken, fish and rabbit hide glues.

That's what we're trying to determine. I didn't know beef and chicken could be used.
