Epoxy glue..... deal??
I've gone across to using 5 min epoxy on some of my pens and have been:eek: shocked at the price being asked for small amounts of epoxy in the retail stores.
In the past I always had a bit of 5 min epoxy lying arround just incase.
But when you start using it in volume you start looking at the price.
I'm seeing prices of $10 or more for 24mL of epoxy:eek:
Hell I'm used to paying $70 for a 20L of spray glue.
What alternatives are others using for the pen thing.
I've thaught about west system or other bulk epoxies but for the small amounts you want to mux up at a time for pens is it a realistic thing.
Is it worth me chasing a deal (Soundman INC) on retail packed epoxy.
Is this a problem for others
I know I can do a lot better than $10 for 24mL, particularly if its in quantity.

Soundman I saw a 90 second epoxy at Bunnings the other day $20 for 24mls. I use Rapid Cure when I use epoxy, it is a 1:1 mixing ratio and 5 min setting time. Comes in 250ml and 500ml. There is also Techniglue, it is a 2:1 mixing ratio and the West System epoxy which is 5:1 mixing ratio through Carb-a-tec.

Last lot of 5-min I bought, was $50 (with trade discount!) for 2x100mL tubes, which I considered exxy but had no options as I was out bush at the time.
Am almost on the last of it, will possibly get another dozen pens before I have to source some more... so methinks I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread!

Epoxy Glue
I have switched to Araldite superstrength man that stuff is amazing, I was so impressed I payed $112.00 for 1 litre from Bunnings I filled a 60ml syringe of each and now I can mix it by the ml I have no waste at all zero, zilch. You do have to wait 16 hrs until you can turn and you have about 3 to 4 hrs to work with it. But it is worth the wait I haven't had a blowout since I started using it. Very pleased indeed my pens will last forever......lol

Anyone building a small boat would waste 20mm every time they make a batch!
Of course it's not 5 minute stuff, but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to do a small calculation based on the 5 litre rate.... it's not 5 minute epoxy though.
Why not trawl the boatbuilding fora for a boatbuilder near you, then the yellow pages for a pathologist, pinch a couple of sample bottles from their rubbish bin    then visit the boat builder?
A five litre pack of epoxy would make 250 20ml kits after all!

I have considered a couple of things.
I know I can get decent generic 24mL retail packs thru one of my existing electronics wholsale suppliers & in quantity from there tha price is an awfull lot better than $10 each.
I spoke to a rep from a packaging company I deal with that sells some adhesives. She mentioned that they have a bulk pack commercial epoxy product.
5 min is a reasonable compromise between CA and the slower setting epoxies but more working time would be good for me too as I almost never do 1 or 2 pens.
The retail packs are quite convienient, but getting hold of some 10 or 20mL suringes is certainly a doable thing.
I recon the pump packs would probably be a bit too much in one go for pens
I like CA, and I hear polyeurathane is good but I think epoxy has lots going for it.
I have seen the name brand product in bigger packages in the past..... where big bro did his trade they used to get 24hour arildite in 5 gal drums. BH big bro is keen on araldite.
At one place I worked we used to use 5 min for potting electronics and we had it in 4L tins.
I'll have a poke arround in my travels.
Any further info would be of interest to all concerned, I think.
