Glue for spotted & flooded gum
Going to make some furniture using the salvage timber that Bruce set up for the forum members.
Is ordinary pva suitable for spotted gum, the timber looks a bit waxy.
I expect pva will be ok for rose gum.
(love the flooded gum pity there wasn't a lot more in me packs)

Test it out on scrap bits Bob, you'll know for sure in a couple of hours.
If its waxy try wiping the join area with some prepwash first, might help?....................................................................

Have read somewhere that Spotted gum is a pain to glue and that any glue surfaces should be freshly cut or planed no more than 2 hours before gluing. I'm sorry I cant advise on a suitable glue for this species.

- I shoulda thought of that
Out to the shed for some trials with pva
1. as is
2. on fresh cuts
3. after wiping with thinners
I'll let it cure overnight and do the grip test tomorrow

Just an update for anyone interested.
I glued up some spotted gum blocks and flooded gum blocks
1 set of each straight out of the rack
1 set wiped down with thinners
Belted all 4 test blocks real hard this morning and the glue held up.
Couldnt break the timber or the glueline.

I helped build a workbench some months back for a friend. The top was spotted gum. As I was unaware of the "problems" of glusing spotted gum so we just went ahead and glued up using Triton PVA glue. No speacial treatment was used before the glue up.
No problems so far.

Hi Echidna,
I made a outdoor sculpture piece some time back, from bent laminated spotted gum, and used Bondcrete. It is a watery version of PVA, and great to brush on quickly, as you tend to do with timber straight out of the steamer. It held up to the weather, and the laminations lasted prolly a couple of years with full exposure and very little TLC.
