Thread: Problem with glues holding

Forget any idea of gluing to a poly tarp, it is a plastic that simply defies gluing, you need to use some sort of mechanical attachment.

Even the velcro is a hard product o glue to..( I know this I am an ex Velcro Distributer)....if you want to glue velcro reliably you need to use either the correct grade of adhesive backed or the heat and solvent activated adhesive grade and use the resin on the product as an interface.

Sew on hook and loop tape is cheap as chips...or it should be..even the genuine stuff....so sew it on.

As for people thinking hook and loop tape wont hold in this application.......use a big enough piece and put it in sheer and you will be surprised what hook and loop tape will hold, and that is without resortring to the high hold prodcts like MVA8.

But for this whole exercise, you are better off putting some dynabolt eye in the wall and hooking up to the eyes in the tarp with shackles and or short lengths of chain.

I have a couple of silver tarps strung up permanently here and if you get the tension right and above all prevent them from flapping, the eyelets hold well in the better tarps. I get about 2+ years out of a good tarp.
The last batch where AusTrail, the last one I got from supercheap I took straight back, the eyelets where rubbish.

Key phrases being 'big enough piece' and 'in sheer'. I was picturing a relatively small strip of velcro, as sold in many stores. Those strips wouldn't be wide enough to hold well. A fair area would need to be covered.

I'm fully aware of just how well velcro can hold, (seen those velcro body-suits?), but wind won't necessarily only provide a sheering force. It tends to move around and push things in all sorts of directions. I still reckon it could peel off the velcro pretty easily.

Oh yes inddedy, the important think with getting hook and look tape to perform in a high strength application is not allowing it to peel.

Even pieces of standard hook and loop 25mm wide and 200mm long can yeld good strength both in tension and in sheer as long as it is not allowed to peel.

In fact people often run into problems where they ellimanate peel and underestimate the holding power of the closure.
