Default Gluing Leather Pieces to Timber

    Hi

I have just made a woodworking mallet.

On the faces that are used to strike I am going to glue pieces of leather to soften the blows. (I saw this recently on a woodworking video)

My question is what glue to use to stick leather to tassie oak.

    I have:

    Titebond II
    Titebond III
    PVA Glue
    Glue Gun
    CA
    Spray adhesive
    Liquid Nails
    Epoxy

Would any of these work properly?

In the videos he uses something called contact cement. I would rather not have to go and buy something just for this simple taks though.

    Cheers

Contact adhesive is the way to go, can get it in the junk shops for a couple of bucks. OR use your spray adhesive but do a fair few coats on each side before sticking.

Wood striking wood has been no big deal in my carving shop. Most of my gouges (Pfeil) need to be able to take a swing or twenty with a lead core, 30 oz mallet.
I have made some mallets from alder log pieces (Alnus viridis) with the expectation that my expensive carving gouges are "bash-worthy."
Yes, they are. I can't hit them hard enough to be a problem.
Quite frankly, I'd like to find the situation when and where I really do break something.
What an exotic reason to go shopping.

I'd go with Titebond II. Contact adhesive sticks well to leather, but sometimes not so well to wood.
For thin leather, you can put the Titebond on both surfaces, let it dry for at least an hour, then put the leather in place and use a hot iron to re-activate it. Not sure how thick your leather face is.
Amazing how often you use a deadblow mallet when you have one.

Titebond 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, epoxy, PVA will all work. Leather sticks very well with timber. I glue a piece of leather at the bottom of the leg of every thing I make.
