Default Gluing pine with a lot of resin

I'm in the process of gluing together 70 x 35mm untreated framing timber into a chunky workbench top. It's not the finest grade timber, and while it's dry, some of the lengths have quite a lot of resin in them. The surface of some of these pieces even feels a bit sticky/tacky if you run your finger along them, especially right after planing off the rougher head grooves.

Is this likely to affect the performance of the glue joint? How does PVA handle timber with a lot of resins it? I guess I'm going to find out myself either way, but if anyone has experience in doing so, please share. I can always change the glue I'm using if need be. I'm also intending to use quite a bit of epoxy on it after the glue-up to fill any knots, timber imperfection, and perhaps more importantly, any gaps between glue joints. I'll do this both sides just as a bit of extra assurance.

    Cheers

With respect, this does not make a lot of sense. PVA has minimal gap filling properties, any "gaps between glue joints" means an unglued area, and retr-filling with epoxy is rarely 100% effective. I would suggest either of two approaches:

EITHER: Joint the edges more accurately to eliminate visible gaps, use PVA on both surfaces and clamp securely. [Clean surfaces with solvent and allow to dry before gluing.]

OR: Use epoxy. My methodology would be:
    • joint surfaces well,
    • wash surfaces with acetone or MEK to remove resin,
    • while still wet apply thin coat of epoxy - this aid penetration/bonding,
    • thicken epoxy slightly and apply even glue coat,
    • assemble and clamp moderately and evenly,
    • wait an hour and remove squeeze out.

Rather than using epoxy to fill knot holes and imperfection may I suggest that you drill or route them out and use matching timber plugs or fillets. It will probably look better and be more functional.
