One tip that helped me is to candle the joint prior to gluing. Basically, you backlight the joint and look for
gaps. Don't glue up till you resolve the gaps.
In my case, this revealed that the jointer machine I was using produced scalloping on the joint surface.
It took me a while to figure out the process to get the results I wanted. In the end, it was worth the work.
