Metho to clean spotted gum prior to glue ups
Hi guys and gals. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is any difference in using methylated spirits instead of acetone to wipe down spotted gum prior to glue ups. This is to remove the oils that it produces. My normal method is to glue it up straight after surfacing to avoid the need to wipe it down. But I have a rather large glue up that I want to prepare with dominos so this won’t be possible. I usually use titebond 3 for my glue ups. I have west systems epoxy and titebond 2 at home too. Open to any suggestions. Thanks your help [emoji1303]

This is the first I've heard of needing to wipe down spotted gum. Whilst I've not done an abundance of work with it, I have used it on enough projects to think that were it an issue it would have manifest itself by now. I'll watch for other responses with interest.

My first attempt at gluing spotted gum failed completely, I used regular PVC and glued it much as I have lots of timber over the years, and after a week I was able to just pull the joints apart. After some research I went Titebond 3 and wiped with acetone, which was a success. Of course I don't really know whether it was the glue or the acetone or the combination that made the real difference
I can't help as to whether metho is any use, but maybe try a test with some off cuts and see what results they give.
Cheers Andrew

Hey lance. You might be doing something different to me. I’ve had the same experience with Andrew a few times. Now I’m super cautious when gluing it up.
Thanks Andrew. I think I’ll stop being cheap and just go and buy some acetone haha. I might do a test piece with the offcuts for future reference.
Thanks for the feedback

Or use polyurethane glue, no need to wipe down then.

Would you recommend sikabond tech grip from Bunnings or would I have to use something like what titebond offer? Thanks [emoji1303]

I can't comment on that one specifically because we used Timbatech glues at my old work, but I don't see any reason it wouldn't be suitable.
