Repair of epoxy on timber joint - epoxy to epoxy?
Building a harp and using epoxy for the first time (west systems) on certain joints. I did not use any thickening agent as the joint is quite flush.
In gluing the body together I had a joint failure on one of four joints. If you can imagine four sides of a tall slim box (no front or back yet) I have failure on one top corner. I can't force it apart very far without risk of damage to another corner, but can just get sandpaper in. The other joints appear to be very strong and there is evidence of the glue takeup into the timber in the failed joint. Since the joint was quite flush, I suspect overclamping was the issue.
Regluing - epoxy to epoxy?
I can't get down to totally clean wood without totally dismantling it. I'm really not keen to dismantle everything unless absolutely necessary.
My plan is to sand the surfaces (which will still contain remnants of epoxy) to give better surface area. I will also add small blocks inside the corner to increase surface area, which I did at the base anyway.
My fear is that the epoxy won't bond to the epoxy. I've seen differing views on this.

Epoxy will bond to epoxy - its polyester that won't bond to polyester (epoxy will also bond to polyester - but many people seem to be able to confuse epoxy resins with polyester resins).
Sand with nothing finer than 80 grit, though - you need to key it to create a mechanical bond.

West epoxy with no thickening agent will get into the finest cracks.
You should have no problem glueing the small gap.
If the gaps goes right through the joint you will need to fill or tape over the back of the gap.
Or the epoxy will drain through and not fill the gap.Scally
