Default Selleys 308 High Stress Wood Glue

Hey, I'm thinking of gluing my yr 12 major with the named glue. The timber I'll be gluing is Tazzie oak, which I will stain once it is all put together. I've checked the Selleys website and Selleys Aquadhere is said to be good to stain, but the Selleys 308 High Stress Wood Glue doesn't state whether it's good or bad at absorbing stain. I was just asking any members who've used Selleys 308 High Stress Wood Glue or Selleys Aquadhere to give me some advice. Also, the stain I'll be using is black japan, for any who've used it, can i have some feedback please? ^^
    Thanks
    ~James

I haven't tried staining Selleys 308, but I've found Techniglue epoxy easier to use, and you can pigment it. You could do it with black pigment obtainable from an art shop.

I will put in a second vote for Techniglue epoxy, I have some 308 in the shed and wasn't happy with the bond (more than likely my mistake) but I have moved on to Techniglue now and love the stuff. The brown part stinks though
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

The advantage of 308 is it does have gap filling ability and a reasonably long pot life, 1 hour at 20deg over aquadere or yellow glue/PVAs.

Selleys state it does not take stain readily however if you are using Japan Black I would suggest it will be OK. I have read other comments that state UF glues do take stain. Aquadere does not take stain as
    Echnidna said.

I have not experienced any difficulty with 308 and clamping pressure is not as crucial as with PVAs however it is a little trickier than the paste epoxies like Techniglue (runnier). Do follow safety precautions.

As for Japan Black....... I found it hard to get a satisfactory finish but I was trying to apply on a softwood, Tassie Oak might be more forgiving. I have not pulled the tin off the shelf after my first and last disaster. Suggest you test and or practice first before final decision.

    Cheers
    Mike

Pva has been impervious to any stain that I've tried.

If you glue the job up properly there should not be any glue exposed for staining.

Wipe down all joints with a wet rag and dry off before the adhesives has cured. For the most part Aquadhere is sufficient. The strength should be maintained through joint construction NOT the type of glue used.

Or you could go totally radical and use hide glue

Advantage of PVA over 308 in my experience is ease of preparation, application and drying time.

One advantage of 308 is that when sanding it does not clog paper, but can severely cut flesh if your're not careful. It is also a very high stress glue so do you need that much strength on your project.

    All the best with it.

    Cheers
