Default Glue for laminating a jarrah kitchen bench.

I am trying to make a kitchen bench by laminating 'sticks' of reclaimed jarrah. The sticks are 40mm high and 30mm deep (front to back). Each is about 800mm long. They have been run through a thicknesser and have clean faces. I'd like to know what kind of adhesive I ought to use to prevent any separation from wood movement. Also, should I use dominoes, biscuits or dowels to join the sticks? (I can't afford the domino system, but could probably make a jig to drill and chisel out domino-like mortise slots.) Any advice on how to stick the whole thing together would be appreciated. (Never really done any woodworking before, in case that's not already obvious.)

Get yourself a biscuit jointer. Done lots of successful projects with a $29.00 one that goes on a cheap grinder. Few weeks ago I got a Ryobi for $129 I think.

Key for the newbie with biscuits is that you have some latitude side to side but not a whole lot up/down...I punch out kitchen benchtops with one...and it's nice and quick..Cottage Kitchen.jpg

Titebond 2 is my glue of choice...https://www.masters.com.au/product/9...?bmUID=lpce14x

As a newbie I need to mention you'll need some kind of clamping device/s. Ones for what you're planning may not be cheap...and you'll need a few depending on your proposed bench top size. Regardless of all that you're also going to require some fairly serious flattening and sanding capabilities to get the best final result...

As you're using Jarrah would you be in WA? If so I may be able to assist in my shed, depending on your timelines. Assistance for newbies would be gratis of course..

Thanks for a helpful response. I'm in Victoria, so I'd be a bit far to come, but your offer is greatly appreciated.

I have got 5 cast iron sash clamps for a 1200mm length of bench. I figure they'd come in handy for future jobs so I don't mind investing in stuff like that.

I'll have a look around for a biscuit joiner and grab some titebond.

Your bench looks lovely. Exactly the kind of result I'm after. I'll post pics as I proceed.

I ended up using neither dominoes, biscuits nor dowels. Instead I got some steel square section and used it to sandwich the piece during glue up. I thought this would prevent bowing, and it also helped pull everything into alignment.

The light blue things in the pic are the steel section. The dark blue are the sash clamps. Here's the same setup used on another section of the bench.

I used Titebond III for its longer working time, and needed every second of it. I think I used more than was necessary, but I'd rather have done that than not used enough. Still very much learning from these experiences.

It came out quite flat with a lot of glue to clean off.

It tidied up nicely. Now I am trying out oiling the underside of the bench to try to arrive at a technique I'm both happy with and capable of repeating reliably.

Thanks for the previous replies. I've still got one section of bench to do. I've get the reclaimed jarrah and will be starting to prepare it today. Any hints or tips on refining my process would be great.

    Cheers
    Andrew
