Default old singer sowing machine stand : epoxy vs other ?

    Hello,

My wife wants me to fix some broken bits on the legs of an old cast iron singer sowing machine stand.

    Was wondering about

    1. $2 shop epoxy

    2. more expensive epoxy - JB Weld ? Loctite ? Other

    3. Bar of silvery metal stuff that I saw at last years Melbourne woodwork show - dont know what its called approx 40cm long and thick as a pencil only cost a few dollars. Basicallly you melt this stuff with a flame and it glues metal together - whats this process called ? Is it brazing ?

I know nothing about working with metal.

Personally, I'd go the JB Weld - it's only about $12 from Masters.

As for that silvery metal stuff...if it was being demonstrated on aluminium cans, it's a brazing rod for aluminium and it won't work on iron/steel.

To braze cast iron you'll really need an oxy-acetylene torch.

I am not a metal worker but I do know that cast iron is not easy to repair. I would post on the metal work section of the forum with a photo of the problem.

What Orraloon said. There are specific techniques for welding cast iron - go to a welding/metal work forum, and only listen to professionals who have done it before - successfully.

Steamy, If you try an epoxy or similar and it does not work, it could be very difficult to get it all out of the pores of the CI in order to get it properly welded later. I suspect the advice about going to the metalwork forum and finding someone who has done it successfully before was intended as a first resort, rather than a last resort. Hope this is not too late.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
