A spray adhesive for Aluminium disc bonding abrasive paper?
I used to spray a 3M product to an Aluminim disc and also onto the sandpaper, wait a while then push the two together. That gave me a abrasive wheel for sanding. I have run out of the old 3M spray adhesive and would appreciate any advice on what spray glues may be available for this job, today.
Thanks

Hi Graham. The best thing to use as far as I have found is good old PVA glue to stick cloth backed sandpaper discs onto either aluminium or steel disc wheels. The contact type glue is just too much hard yakka to get off once the disc is worn out. With PVA all you need to do is soak the disc in water overnight to remove the sandpaper. Of course there is always the velcro backed discs which makes changing discs a breeze, however the velcro type ones always seem to have a bit of "give" between the mating surfaces making them less than ideal for some uses. Just my two bob's worth.

There was a post on these forums and I can't remember how long ago or where it is that linked to a glue that did just that. You may be able to find it in a search but I can't, does anyone remember it or have it bookmarked?

There are a few 3M spray adhesives, but one that I used to like was 3M 75 Repositionable. If you spray one of the surfaces, it can be peeled and repositioned for an hour or so before setting, spray it on both surfaces and it works as a contact adhesive and bonds upon contact. Used to be very handy to tack paper templates to material, smooth and cut to shape, then peel the template leaving minimal residue to clear off the material, but also very handy for bonding disks to backing plates etc using the two surface approach. Much quicker than the conventional contacts as the solvent evaporates and dries the spray very quickly, so minimal waiting for the adhesive to tack before joining.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

There was a 3M product called disk adhesive that is for exactly this purpose it remains sticky and you can peel of an old disk and replace it with a new one and could get a couple of changes before you needed to clean it off and re apply it to the disk just coat a new paper and apply is a spread on type of arrangement to both surfaces.

That might be the stuff I recall in the lost post. The post linked to a video that was quite good and explained the advantages of it over a normal spray adhesive.

There was a tube of 3M adhesive used in panel shops called feathering adhesive used for attaching sanding pads - not sure if it's still available.
3M also make a repositionable adhesive in a spray can.

3M ReMount is available from Amazon if you struggle to find it elsewhere but I can't attest to it's efficacy I'm afraid.
It seems a bit pricey so you might want to give one or two of the other's you'll find by googling or searching on Amazon using the search term 'Repositionable adhesive'.
The main manufacturers seem to be 3M, Scotch, Ultratape, AD404 and Krylon.
I've never had to glue sandpaper, although was double sided taping some just a few days ago, but I've always just used whatever wood adhesive I have for templates and have even used pritt-stick in a pinch.

There's a recent thread here - https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...e+double+sided - where the guy in the video is espousing the virtues of masking tape and superglue instead of double sided adhesive tape - that might be another possibility.

Too hard to change the paper once it is worn out.
I found out the hard way, I'm after something to hold sandpaper to ali too.
I want something that isn't impossible to change once the paper is worn out, I hadn't thought of a water based glue.
I tried hide glue but it lets go in warm wet weather.
I've seen the video of the masking tape Super glue but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.
