How strong is hot hide glue?

One last shot before I give up on this class of adhesive. How strong is it meant to be?

I’ve had issues with open time that, after many trial runs I’ve found a workaround. I can prep the join with glue and just before putting the join together a final brush of glue appears to wet the join enough to give me enough time to do a joint.

Next problem. I’ve done some test joins. They aren’t nearly as strong as titebond. They are certainly not as strong as the wood. I’ve used MGP10 off cuts which are basically as soft as woods come, and they easily fracture at the glue line. I’ve tried every combination. Thin glue, thick glue, lots of glue, minimal glue, varying clamping force, etc.

Does it sound normal?

I’ve purchased the glue from restorers choice. It’s specified as 160-220 gram strength. Supposedly not too shabby. Someone else here mentioned it’s good stuff, so I’m really at the loss and don’t really want to fork out another $40 for the ubeaut version unless someone can confirm that it sounds like a bad batch or something?

I just watched that video. Definitely very different to the experience I've had, where I can snap the glue join with my fingers.

I suspect the glue is faulty... will get some ubeaut and see. Thanks.

Sounds like you overheated the glue to me. How are you heating the glue and maintaining its temperature?

I use a repurposed rice cooker.
Start on cook then change to warm when the water shows first signs of boiling.
No problems; use Restorers Choice hide glue.

Is there a big difference between the titebond Hide glue and the likes of ubeaut granules and double boiler typical setup? Similar strength but difference in application or process?

Pretty confident this was not the case. Used a wax heater and verified temps along the way with a very accurate digital thermometer.

I've done maybe, 20 test joins trying to figure out what the issue is, using every damn combination of glue/water ratio, temperature, ambient temperature, etc. On the verge of giving up and just going back to titebond! The open time is terrible and the glue strength appears to be significant less than commercial glues. The only variable I can think of is perhaps I got a bad batch.
