Default Threaded rod glue into redgum knob - best glue?

    Hi,

I want to glue some 1/4 inch threaded rod into a redgum knob (30mm cube) to serve as a tightening knob on an easel. It will go into a T-nut in a separate rail at the back to allow tightening of the support shelf.

It will be regularly tightened and loosened as the shelf is moved up and down, so it is not a "set, tighten, and leave" application.

Suggestions of best glue to use?

    thanks, Ian.

'Techniglue' epoxy resin, it won't be moving anywhere as long as you mix it correctly

Yep, 2 part epoxy is the glue.

Remember to thoroughly remove all traces of oil & grease from the threaded rod - acetone (nail polish remover), metho or similar solvents are good. I'm guessing here that you will just be drilling a clearance hole into the knob rather than actually tapping a tread in there, if so you may also find it handy to cut or grind a few notches in the end of the thread that is going into the knob to improve the mechanical lock.

If you are cutting the 1/4" thread from a long rod, don't forget to thread a few nuts onto the rod both sides of the proposed cut, then grind the cut ends to a shallow cone - like the end of a common bolt - & then wind the nuts off the rod, which should 'restore' the threaded end - trying to do this after you have cut the rod is a nightmare.

This part is very important. Cutting a few notches in both the knob and the thread perpendicular to the thread direction is the key to making this hardy. Techniglue sets very hard, but may not provide the best mechanical bond to a smooth surface like a clean drill hole. Making vertical grooves for the glue to penetrate will be much more stable.

A nut insert in the knob may give you a stronger mechanical bond. You could glue the nut insert in with Techniglue as well.

    Cheers
