1/4 to 1/2 inch collet
Hi
Was using a 1/4" shaft bit in a 1/2" router using the reducing collet (is that the word).
Any way when I tried to take it out it was jammed. Eventually I got the 1/4 bit out but had heaps of trouble getting the collet out.
Seemed like the slots in the router thing that holds the bit were almost closed.
Any ideas what could have caused it. Probably driver error?
Or is this a common occurrence? I am about to both 1/2 routers into my new router table mainly for use with the gifkins jigs.
As I will be using the 1/4 just as much as the 1/2 should I mount one of the 1/2" routers and the 1/4" router into it so that I use the 1/4 in the 1/4 and half in the 1/2.
OR
if I troubles with the reducer dont happen often should I just mount both 1/2's.
Was hoping to be able to put the dovetail bit in one and the straight cutter in the other like roger gifkins does?
thanks for your help, sorry if u are as  as me now

It might be woth trying to get some more collets for the router. I know that with some routers you can 1/2 and 1/4 inch collets for the one router, eliminating the need for reducing bushes.Have a nice day - Cheers

Hee Hee
never ever post a thread with a 3 yo on your lap while he is watching a scary movie....
To make it simple.....is using a 1/4" router bit in a 1/2" router, using the collet, prone to failure?
cheers

Triton router Daz? I think it is.
I use mine a lot and haven't had any probs. getting the bit out of the collet - sometimes. but the collet out of the router - never. Maybe you are tightening it up too hard? Dunno, but don't go putting it in too loosely either. :eek:If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Hi Gumby
No they are the Ryobi ERT2100watt jobbies. I wanted 2 like rogers set up but couldnt afford getting 2 x tritons  .
Paid $145 each and am happy to buy the xtreme extension to facilitate changes above the table if/when I get sick of bending over (settle children ).
cheers

Dazzler,
I have the same router and also have trouble getting the 1/4" collet out. The first time it got stuck I thought that I had ruined the 1/2" collet but I found that I just had to unscrew and remove the locking nut. This allowed me to remove the 1/2" collet assembly and then it was easy to get the 1/4" collet out.
I dont know why it gets stuck but it's easy to get out if you remove the locking nut.

Yep, I have the same trouble with the Ryobi that I use for hand held work, seems to be the way the collet is designed  I find that I have to remove the collet nut and push the bit/reducer out from behind.

Same as termite. I try very hard not to get 1/4 bits if I can at all avoid it. So far, have been able to find almost all the bits I want in 1/2, and leave the reducer on the shelf.
If I don't get it really tight, the bit slips in the reducer. Too tight and getting the thing out is a b .. difficult.

That is all good advice.
Any idea if you can get the Gifkins 1/4" dovetail and square cutters with a 1/2" shank
Couldnt see any on the site. Will send an email to them.
thanks

Dunno about the design of the collet & reducer on the Ryobis, but the collet on my Hitachi m12v has 3 slots, only one of them right through. The reducer is the same, 3 with only one right through.
I have a small o ring permanently in the base of the collet to prevent 1/2" bits or the reducer bottoming in it.
When I use the reducer, I ensure the through slot on it is lined up with the through slot on the collet, and I tighten up to the same degree I would with a normal router bit.
Also worth putting an o ring on the 1/4" router bit shaft to prevent it bottoming out also.
This may fix the problem if the reducer or bit is jamming in the collet due to bottoming out when tightening, and/or due to excessive tightening needed if the throuigh slots aren't lined up.
As mentioned, not sure if any of this applies or is any use, but worth a mention.
Cheers...............Sean, reduced to tears
