ok I've finally had some time to advance my project. I ordered a 7518 Incra Magnaloc Plate from ToolKing in the US as well as the complete 17" Incra Supersystem. These took a few weeks to arrive. Meanwhile I built a table using two laminate pieces of 18mm MDF, and I found a sheet of nice red Laminex at a local second hand timber supplier in Fyshwick. I built a base modelled off Big Shed's design, but I wasn't trying to win any awards so its fairly roughly put together. I didn't use steel tubing as I couldn't find cheap 'elbows' to connect it, so the base is made from ply framed with Merbau screening (very cheap from Bunnings).
ISSUES.
Ok first issue was glueing the laminex, This stuff really likes to bubble and I found that almost the entire surface needed heavy pressure on it to stop this happening. As it was, I had to pull most of it up and reglue after my first attempt was no good. On the second attempt, I used some spare large 600x400mm tiles, clamped on top, to force it down flat. Fortunately, its still reasonable flat!
Base width - My mdf was 650m wide and despite my initial misgivings. I don't think I'm missing a lot by not having the base width as wide as the Super System fence. Sure, the fence overhangs at each end but the overhang is still useable to support a workpiece. The 650mm is easily wide enough to support the downwards pressure on the workpiece, which is applied to the workpiece as it passes over the routerplate, not back at the edge of the tabletop. This width also allows me to more easily position my eye over the top of the bit. I actually think this is quite good.
Carriage clamp position. Despite carefully following the instructions, I think I got this wrong. The Incra instructions recommend 430mm set back from the centre of the router, but this does not take account of the width of the WonderFence, which is about 85mm. As a result, with a 430mm setback and with the Wonderfence fitted, the adjustable reference scale on the arm cannot be placed at zero. The solution is that the carriage needs to be positioned about 500mm back from the routerbit, which accounts for the width of the wonderfence. I'll post a photo to illustrate. I'm still not sure how much this will affect the operation of the system, but fortunately I have room to drill extra holes if needed.
I'm really annoyed about this, because repositioning the carriage will expose the first line of holes I drilled through the laminex, which look ugly and may well catch on the fence. I'm wondering whether this issue is something Incra already knows about, or is there a 'fix' for this which I'm not aware of? Grateful for any thoughts.
