Bench top router
Hi folk,
I look after a Mens Shed at St. Hilarys Anglican Church in Kew.
We need a bench top router, and I was about to purchase the Hare and Forbes Scheppach HF50 Bench top router when someone referred me to a damning article on Youtube.
I fully understand that for the price I cant expect perfection, but it still needs to be fit for purpose.
Has anyone had good or bad experience with this unit?
Regards,
Peter Elliot

I was going to refer to the thread by Hermit too. Non of the Scheppach gear seems to have a good reputation. I don't know if any improvements have been made to later models of this router table, if so, it might be worth looking at. If it is going into a Men's Shed you want to give the guys something that will help with their skills rather than hinder them.
I think you would be better off buying a portable router and either making a benchtop table for it or buying one off the shelf. Might cost you a bit more but would be better for everyone in the long run.Dallas

The Scheppach unit is trash, I bought one figuring for the price it was worth a punt, I was wrong.
Mine has a few issues, the spindle isn't square to the table, it won't hold a height setting, the table isn't flat, the fence isn't square to the table, the fence isn't straight, etc.
Wish I'd just put a crowbar in my wallet and forked out for something decent.

Our experience at the Blenheim NZ Shed is that machines tend to get at least some level of abuse and misuse. A lot our members are generally reluctant to ask for help, and machines get much more wear and tear than if they only have one user — especially if that user is the person who paid for it. So we have learned to do it once, and do it right rather than buy cheap, and in very short order, have to buy the machine we should have bought in the first place.
Incidentally, the thing that a lot of our members struggle to master is the start button interlock on our Triton TRA001. I've had to explain its function multiple times to the same person, but most worryingly, is finding the spindle has been forced hard against the interlock mechanism by people apparently didn't know it was there or how it worked. We've had the TRA001 for about three years now, and it has never needed to be repaired, so fair dos to Triton.
Peter the triton TRA001 or MOF001 are a good choice for a Menz Shed because they lend themselves to table mounting without needing a lift. If you can get one that is. As far as I know 240V versions are still not available. This is the response I got from their support. I'd already given up and bought a Bosch 1600C by the time I got Craig's email.

Hi, Trevor
Thank you for getting in touch with Triton Tools Customer Services, and thank you for your patience.
Carbatec will indeed be stocking our products again soon! Due to the pandemic, we have had delays (like many tool manufacturers) and we hope to start a restock of Triton again within the coming months.
The TRA001 240V is one of our flagship products, so it will most certainly be available again. Carbatec will also be the point of contact in Australia and New Zealand for servicing of Triton products once they have restocked.
Unfortunately at this stage I'm unable to give you a more specific timeframe.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards,
Craig
