Bosch GOF 1600 CE shaft runout
Had some trouble with my guide bushings not being centered so I bought the Bosch RA1151 sub-base centering cone. Using it I discovered that it was pretty much useless due to the amount of shaft runout my Bosch GOF 1600 CE router has. With the 3/8" straight bit I find I have to 'dynamically' locate the subbase (not real safe) in order to get it properly centered. I tried a brand new 1/4" bit in my 1/4" collet that I have never used with similar results. I'll try to measure the runout with DTI when I get a chance...
My question to the forum is how much runout do you expect a router shaft to have? (This is my first router). Or are centering cones useless?

Is it the shaft or just the bit that is running out?
With the GOF series I would expect to not see any runout at all. I have the GOF1300ACE and it is spot on.
Is your router new?

I’ve used the router maybe 20 times. Bought it in Feb.
Pretty sure it's the shaft causing the run-out.
I've just measured using a DTI. Using a brand new freud 2” flush trim bit (1/2”)I measured .038” of run-out at the bearing (about 2 1/4” from the collet). That’salmost 1mm by my math. Seems rather large to me.
Using a different collet (1/4”) and a 1” bit I got .020”of run-out (1” from the collet).
With the DTI reading straight from the shaft I get .001”

Have you/can you use your DTI to measure runout at the top of the taper in the collet holder? If the issue is the collet holder or shaft, you should be able to see it there. If you have a DTI and some form of mount for it you should be able to rig something to make the measurement, possibly using bits of the edge guide assembly to locate your mount.
Are all of the contact surfaces of the collet holder and collet scrupulously clean, and the closure slots of the collets completely clear? The smallest grains of dust, pitch etc in any of the contact surfaces with cause runout, as will rubbish in the collet slots as it will cause uneven closure of the collet. From your measurements I suspect the collect holder taper rather than the collet taper as the runout appears to be proportional to extension regardless of whether you use the 1/2 or 1/4 collet.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
