Cheap 1/2" router for router table wing in TS
G'day,
I finally got around to fitting a custom wooden router table back into my jet tablesaw ( came with it and made by the previous owner but had been uninstalled). I thought originally to mount the little Makita 3620, but the plunge is quite small and I would have to keep taking it off for routing larger pieces and freehand work etc.
Soooo, and cost is critical here, I am considering a very cheap 1/2" router to fix semi-permanently to the router plate insert. I thought that variable speed was probably a must, but the routers seem to have fairly small holes really so not sure how critical.
The ROK 1800w has variable speed, is $100, (same as craftsman Clarke CR3) at Beyond tools. 60mm plunge
The Wesco ( same as Rockwell) 1500w is only $85 at Masters 50 mm plunge
Both the above have safety on off switches which require two buttons to be pressed to start, and appear spring loaded. Not the end of the world as it could be velcroed on and a remote switch used, but annoying.
Alternatively I could just about spring for the Maktec MT360 for $160 which has no variable speed but at least has a proper switch.
I am not planning on doing spindle moulding, the biggest I plan would be a round over up to 3/4" radius and mostly smaller diameter bits.
Your thoughts?
Regards

I just received some more CARB-I-TOOL router bits and they state up to 25mm 24,000rpm, 26 to 50mm 18,000rpm, 51 to 63mm 16,000rpm 64 to 75mm 14,000rpm and 76 to 87mm 12,000rpm if that helps re single speed or variable speed.

I have a GMC 2050W variable speed router that I no longer need. If you are interested, I'd be looking for $40.

One more thing: what is the width of the hole in the plate on the GMC, it looks quite small. The one on my Malita 3620 is about 67mm across, much bigger than any bit you would ever use in it, but some of these others seem quite small .( maybe for safety)?

Hmm seems quite common that these router have cast metal cutter guards barely 35- 40mm across. Not sure the point in the variable speed unit in these cases then
