    Default Choosing a Router Table

I am in the throws of choosing a router table. I have narrowed my search down to two.

Carbatec have a beauty going for $599. On the other hand, Triton have the router table and stand with a combined price of about $400. My question is fairly simple - am I getting $200 of extra value from going to the Carbatec? I have an old GMC 2000W router that I have been using for about 4 years freehand, and feel it is time to look at a table. I will buy a small router to continue freehand work, as the GMC is a big unit to use freehand (putting in door handles, even with a jig, takes a bit of muscle to move the sucker around).

    Thoughts appreciated

    Hi KB

Have you thought of building your own.

IMO you want as large a top as possible that is dead flat and stable. I found small irregularities with my triton table (mine may have been a dud ).

    Here is mine;

    http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...t=router+table

2.5 times bigger than either of those and cost at least half of those options.

    Just a thought.

    cheers

Avoid the Triton. Quite a few Triton users have gone to the table sold by Grahame at woodworksupplies.com.au

The Triton isn't flat and has too many high spots where the router plate, sliding panel and even the rails are not all the same height.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

    Default Choosing a Router Table

    Thanks to all that replied.

Based on the responses, I am going to look further at building my own. This is now the perfect excuse to buy that morticing machine - so that I can build a bulletproof base for the table!

    Thanks again

Good luck with the table construction. I will look forward to the pictorial.

    KB,

You have made the right decision; I once owned the MS-R from Carbatec, and found it was an absolute turkey. I eventually sold it for a pittance since it was a waste of space in my workshop. I believe Auld Bassoon did the same.

For a simple router table (to which you can then add your own bells and whistles later), have a look at Roger Gifkins' site:

After long hard thinking I settled on the Triton Router table set (RTA300 table, RSA300 legs and TRA001 router).
She's a beaut and presently is living in the front room until I can bring myself to relegate her to the shed.
I think she kinda adds to the decor but SWMBO is making some strange noises and last night my dinner was burnt...

Yep the fence on this table is crapola! Rocker's MS-R is now being used as a rather sturdy tool stand form my thicknesser and scroll saw (works great for this LOL).
How much wood could the woodchuck chuck if the woodchuck could chuck wood?
