Oven cleaner soaked for 5 minutes and clean with a small hard brush.

I would suggest that if they have bearings, take them off before using oven cleaner.

Oven cleaner can attack the TC solder and weaken the joint. A soak in strong black coffee has been found to be effective and doesn't attack the TC solder.

Find a local gunshop and get a bottle of Hoppes Gun Cleaner. Its designed to remove burnt hard residue from metal surfaces without damaging the metal. That and a tooth brush should do the trick!

I use an ultrasonic cleaner.
It works fine. What it doesn't remove outright it softens up so it wipes off easily.
Ultrasonic cleaners are just great. Use it for all sorts of things, glasses jewellery, toothbrushes, files, anything non porous.
Cheers,
Dan

Ultrasonic cleanres aren't all that expensive and you can buy it for SWMBO for her birthday or christmas present to clean her jewellery and find it just happens to clean router bits, a bargain I would say.
