    Default Are collets universal ?

Or should the title be universal reducer?

I have a confession. Yesterday in the shed I was making a couple of jigs on the table mounted Triton and required that I change from a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch router bit at the table. Since the dusty is on the other side of the shop I went ahead and started without turning the dusty off...big mistake. As the 1/4 inch came out so too did the collet which then slipped down onto the plastic dust guard and was promptly sucked down the DC line. I didn't hear it go all the way so I spent the next couple of hours breaking the strategically placed non glued sections apart to try and find it. I even used some rare earth magnets on the joining strip from some yellow tongue flooring all to no avail.

Next I emptied the cyclone before the DC no collet here and finally the DC bag but nothing! The blessed thing has 'grown wings and taken off' as my dear old mum used to say.

The long and short of this is can I use a 1/2 to 1/4 reducer from a Makita in the Triton ?

    Regards

    Mike

As per DJ, providing that you had a reducing collar style. I believe that some routers (not the Triton or Mak that I have) use seperate 1/2in and 1/4 collets, rather than a 1/2in collet and a reducing collar.

Incidently, if you need to obtain a replacement collar, sawandbits.com had some listed for about $1 plus postage. See the thread about Sehle router bits and check their site if you are interested.

I have a Makita 3612 ( IIRC) and the 1/4 " collet from that fits the Triton ok
