    Default Corrosion on new shanks

Don't know if anybody else has had this experience:

Opened a new boxed set of cutters and the first thing I noticed was that the cutters were relly hard to get out of their individual sockets. This happened once before and I threw the box away I was so frustrated. There must be a lot of people with serious cuts on their fingers from removing these cutters.

But the worrying thing is the amount of 'corrosion' on the shanks. I know if I cleaned them all up with brasso or a mild corrosive substance it would almost disappear. The cutters are an excellent brand and do a wonderful job so there is no thought of taking them back to the supplier. I guess it must be the oil they are dipped in reacting with the plastic insert over time- maybe years. Anyone else had this happen?

I can show pictures if people want that.

I know what you mean about the difficult removal of the bits - I don't have much corrosion on the shanks but there is some.

Don't think it is an oil plastic reaction but acid fingers [as in my case] and not giving them a wipe over before replacing as any dust on them will attract moisture.

    Regards,
    Bob

It's my belief that they come in plastic inserts specifically because it doesn't react with the shafts. Must have been something that happened during packing, especially if they're brand new. My CMT panel-raising set has been in the original plastic inserts for years and not a sign of problems, as have many, many other bits and sets.

I made the mistake, many years ago, of making a mounting block out of oak - now that's corrosion!

    Default Corrosion on shaft

HI only my second post. I had the same trouble getting router bits out of their plastic holders. I found out that at least some manufacturers but a corrosion inhibitor coating on their bits. After I used Blade and Bit to clean them they slide in and out of their holders easily. Your right I sliced a couple of fingers getting them out the first time. Steve

I am a fast learner when it comes to getting cut on things.
I use the little paint can opener they give away when you
buy paint, I get mine at Lowes, to pull the bit out far enough
to get a good hold on it.
