Default Dovetail router bit tearout 90 9808 1225

    The picture says it all.

Is the solution to cut the edges of the female slot with a chisel first?

    Any other suggestions?

You could leave the piece a few mm wider than you need to allow for the tearout, then plane it to finished size after.

What kind of machine are you using? Is it possible to set up a sacrificial fence to support the work?

Thanks elanjacobs. I took your advice and went the sacrificial route to plane back the tearout by 4 mm. I am using an old Makita router in a homemade jig/guide.
There were only four HB dovetail slots to cut so not too much of a problem. They are to mount two bars across the top of a Japanese kotatsu to stop the blanket/futon flopping down onto the back of the heating element. It's cold here now!
