    Default Edge jointing

    sorry to monopolise this forum

I just edge jointed a couple of boards using the new router table and woodpecker fence.
Torquata 19mm bit and the triton baby router running at top speed.
I was disapointed to see tiny ridges on the jointed edges and the faces were not perfect mates although the boards clamped up pretty tight with a nice clean join.

I tried a leisurely feed rate and had the ouitfeed fence set with up a couple of shims provided with the woodpecker. 10 or 15 thou roughly

I used to do this job using a piece of ally angle screwed to the board and i would drag the gmc 1200 router up the board with a bottom bearing running on the ally. I reckon I got a better finish. I used a 1/2" x 2" carbitool flush trimmer.

Should I expect babies bottom finish off this machine? or do I still need to talk to it breifly with the old #4 smoother?? or even with the trusty veritas cabinet scraper.

BTW I ordered a router extension from timbecon [see prev post]

Some say that the small ripples are not a problem, others disagree.

You can slow the feed rate to reduce the incidence of rippling or use a plane to take a fine slice off.

My *personal* preference would be to plane a few thou off so the surface is sliced and not compressed.

The same scalloping effect can occur on planers and jointers.

Ray, just a thought, did you get the grain direction right for the edge jointing? Against the grain you could be getting slight tearout along the edge.

You should be getting a pretty good finish straight off the bit I reckon, given a high motor speed & moderate feed rate.

    Cheers...............Sean
