    Default Small(er) router recommendations

    Hi all,

I am looking to purchase a router very soon to assist in some planned furniture builds. I'd be looking to use the router for doing tongue and groove boards, dados, rebates, grooving to hold panels, and rounding over edges.

Long term I expect to end up owning both a smaller and larger router (something like a Hitachi M12V2), however as funds are limited, and my planned projects are on the smaller side, I'm looking to get a smaller router for now.

Can anyone help with some recommendations? Would something like a Hitachi M8SA2 do the job?

    Cheers,
    Sean

I've had 2 big routers, a tr-12 and the biggest roybi always used hand held. The router I have now is a 1/4 inch Dewalt which I find great handheld, even with one hand.
Dewalt 1/4in(8mm) Premium Plunge & Fixed Base Combi Router. #D26204K-XE.
For all the tasks you describe it's fantastic and it has a light underneath which is really handy. Mine was about $100 less than that link (2 years ago). Makita make a similar model but the attachments are sold separately. Some guys imported them prior to being in sale here and posted reviews at the time.

Something to consider long term is the collet size- 1/4 inch vs 1/2 inch, generally you use 1/2 inch bits in bigger routers.
