How thick is the table top/insert?
Is the power switch on the router in the OFF position?
The TR series router will wind itself up to a point where the collet clears a normal table insert enough to do through table bit changes. It also self engages a spindle lock when raised to that extent, so only a single spanner is required for bit changes.
There is a mechanical interlock between the switch and the raising mechanism to prevent you raising the bit to locking point with the switch on, this operates from the shutter over the switch, and only allows the bit to fully raise to locking point when the switch is in the off position and the shutter is accross the switch.
I doubt that you would need a collet extension on a conventional table setup with a table insert of up to 12mm thickness.

It is a ledacraft table with a cast iron top - The triton router bit that came with the router works fine - It's the carbi tool bits that are short and only poke through the top..
Router Tables : LEDACRAFT MODEL BX-6 ROUTER TABLE
When off I can bring the bit right up and change it through the table, but when on the collet locking device that allows you to change the bit does not allow it to rise as within when the router is turned off.
Also have locked the depth stop right in..

Not relevant to your problem, but just a reminder to remove the spring for under table use.

I had the same problem but for a different reason. I got the extension and I'm happy I did, problem solved and been working fine for over a year now.

Yes, I use it for all router bits. The problem I had was the locking pin would not work so infrustration I got an extension and it's easy to change bits now and to hell with the Triton locking pin not working right. First it got stuck in then it would not engage when the router was lifted and I tried every thing I could. It did work fine at the start but who knows now, I don't care I can now use my router. It's mounted in a Woodpecker lift. The extension is real easy to use with one hand.
