Default Festool OF1400 - worth it?

    Hi guys

Looking at buying a new router and I've almost persuaded myself to splash out on a Festool OF1400.

Tossing up between it and the Bosch GOF 1600. From what I can gather the Bosch doesn't come with an edge guide and is then hard to purchase in Australia, so would push the price up from the retail of $589.00.

Other main reason for considering the OF1400 is I'm going to buy a new TS55 tracksaw and like the idea of being able to run the router on the track (obviously with an attachment). Is it possible to run the Bosch router on the Festool track?

Thinking for ease of use might be best sticking with the one brand. Plus easy availability of Festool accessories.

But also need to factor in the Festool premium.

    Any thoughts?

I have three routers. OF1400, a cordless milwaukee trim router and a Triton TRA001 mounted in a router table. No complaints with the festool, it's a great router and mine has seen a fair bit of use. I agree having the ability to add it onto your track saw track is very handy I do this often.

    Regards.

I've used one occasionally and it was very good to use.
    No complaints!

If you are going to have a tracksaw I think it is a great advantage to be able to use your router of choice with it
FYI I bought an adapter plate to use my makita router with my Festool track and there is too much play in it for my liking

If you have the Makita plate, it have screws to adjust the amount of play.

The one I have Derek is not a genuine Makita baseplate but an aftermarket product that had an extrusion profile to match the Festool track but there is too much wiggle room in it for me

I have an OF1400 and it's a great router. If you have the funds then absolutely go for it IMO. Great dust collection, microadjust is very effective and useful, good handling and plenty of power. I'd buy another in a hearbeat if something happened to mine.

It is of course more expensive than most however so your overall value equation may vary.

    Cheers, Dom

After using the Festool OF 1010, I bought the OF 1400 second hand. I needed to replace some missing or damaged parts and had no trouble ordering them through a local "Paint Spot" store which is also a Festool dealer.
Nice tool to use. Very easy to change bits. I have three different sized collets. Comes with most of what you need although the track adaptor is extra. The fine adjustments work well provided you turn them the correct direction. I also put mine in a very basic table. Love it.

I have two, they are the most used routers out of all the ones in the workshop, brilliant bit of gear. I just put a set of brushes in the oldest one after 15 years of work.

This is the biggest thing pointing me towards the Festool. I already have a domino and if I'm going to get a Festool tracksaw it makes sense to have a router that can easily run on that track.

Significant purchase for a weekend warrior but I genuinely think I'll have these tools for 15+ years. And worse case scenario they hold their value well on the 2nd hand market if for some reason I wanted to sell them

Cheers Dom, this is the kinda feedback I was hoping for. Although the decision was already made I think!

Resale value is definitely a big plus with Festool gear over any other brand, if you can afford the up front purchase price they are a good investment come sale time if your circumstances change

I bought one when I was 62, have used it often and expect it to last a lot longer than me. Its a great router, and its the only one I use hand held. I used to have a big Bosch plunge router and thought highly of it, but the OF1400 is leagues better for balance and ease of use.

Have had: Makita, Bosch and Hitachi plunge routers. Sears Craftsman, makita and Bosch trimmers. Now just a Triton in a table and the Festool. Finally in the sweet spot. I do also have the other usual Festool suspects and really like the systematic approach to portable tools which I use daily.

    Default Of1400

I have the OF1010, OF1400, as well as the big OF2200 but the OF1400 is my go to router most times .I cant imagine there would be any regrets from any Festool owners of an OF1400. I would hazard a guess here that this model is the most popular of the Festool routers. It is functional for me with the tracks the after add-ons in the range of accessories can be expensive .

Gave it a trial run this evening. Just cutting a 12mm groove. The dust collection is outrageously good. Such a well built machine. Already happy with the purchase.
